Over the last decade, conscience objections have surfaced in the public arena, raising questions as to whether counselors may legally refuse services to LGBTQ+ clients due to a counselor’s personally held beliefs. These laws not only deny services to LGBTQ+ clients, but are in direct violation of the ACA Code of Ethics (2014). In addition to values-based referrals, this presentation will address other challenging and complex ethical and legal issues all counselors, particularly those working with LGBTQ+ adults, need to know.

There is limited research on applying ethical decision-making models to supervision (Levitt, Crawford, & Pamphile, 2022). Levitt et al. found that much of the multicultural research on supervision focuses on white supervisors working with minority supervisees, but that limited and outdated research exists regarding supervisors of color. At the same time, the American Counseling Association’s (ACA) Code of Ethics (ACA, 2014) guides counselor supervisors to be aware of multiculturalism in the supervisory relationship (Levitt et al.). This Continuing Professional Development explores the intersection of ethics and race or culture for minority supervisors.
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize cultural issues in supervision.
2. Understand the ethical decision-making process of supervisors of color.
3. Discuss implications for supervisor preparation, practice, and research.

All pre-licensed counselors have mandatory supervision hours before they are eligible for independent practice as a professional counselor. Often, new professionals often experience difficulty locating potential clinical supervisors.Ê Many are not always a “good fit,” or sometimes a supervisee may have to drive long distances to meet in-person. Now, more states licensure boards allow the accrual of clinical supervision hours through live, online video conferences. This course is designed to help clinical supervisors, and pre-licensed counselors better understand ethical issues related to distance supervision and to be aware of technological advances related to the delivery of clinical supervision.
